Maria B. Freed, MHSA
Maria Freed has 25 years of healthcare experience as a senior healthcare manager and hospital administrator. Her previous positions include Assistant Administrator at Coral Gables Hospital, and Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida. She was a former director of international services for HealthSouth Corporation and later served as the Director of International Services for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Maria holds a master’s degree in Health Services Administration and lectures frequently nationally and internationally on the subject of Patient Advocacy. In 2002 she developed a Patient Navigation service for international patients coming to South Florida. She is an experienced healthcare manager having previously managed hospital services for surgery, radiosurgery, oncology, rheumatology, and diabetes units. The field of Patient Navigation is a role she feels passionate about. She believes South Florida is home to some of America’s BEST providers experienced in serving a multi-culturally diverse community. She feels fortunate to be working with the team at Coral Gables Surgery Center,  a facility which excels in patient services, and enjoys a 97% patient satisfaction rate. In 2015 she was awarded the Miami Women Who Rock Advocacy Award. In 2016, she received the AXA Advisors Businesswoman of the Year Award in Healthcare from the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce.

Benny Gonzalez, RN, CNOR
Director of Clinical Operations

Benny Gonzalez attended Trenton State School of Nursing where he earned his baccalaureate in Nursing. He received a Commission in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps where he served over 22 years. He is most proud of serving as a Trauma Care Nurse for the US Shuttle Team in case of an emergency landing site while based out of U. S. Naval Hospital Rota, Spain. Among many roles as a nurse, he participated in an international humanitarian overseas mission providing immunizations to children in remote villages in Africa. He also served as an Emergency Room Department Head and Operating Room Supervisor for a 17 Operating Room Suite at one of the largest military hospital in the U.S. In 2002 he retired from the Navy and assumed the role of Nurse Manager for Coral Gables Surgery Center where he played a major role from the construction and planning phase to the first day of surgery in 2003. Since opening in 2002 the center has achieved a high level of patient and staff satisfaction, consecutive accreditation through AAAHC, and a lower than national infection rate. He is an avid traveler with the goal of seeing the world.

Madelin Lam, CPC
Director of Business Operations

Madelin Lam is a dedicated and technically skilled business professional with a versatile administrative support skill set developed through 23 years of progressive experience in the healthcare industry. She has worked at acute care hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, and multi-specialty medical practices. Her areas of concentration include coding, billing, reimbursement, Medicare & Medicaid compliance, manage care contracts, and practice administration. Mrs. Lam is a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Patient Account technician (CPAT) by AGPAM (The American Guild of Patient Account Management. She is an active member of the American Academy of Professional Coders. She has worked at Coral Gables Surgery Center since its inception in 2003. She takes great pride in the quality of the service and professionalism shown by the staff, and has played a key role in maintaining a high functioning work environment at CGSC. She is an innovative cook and enjoys boating with her husband on Key Biscayne.
